How to Keep Healthy Indoor Air This Allergy Season
Did you know that indoor air quality can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air? Not only do we create poor indoor air quality by using various products, cooking, having pets, and improper cleaning methods, but we often end up with outdoor pollutants creeping inside. Since most people spend about 90% of their time inside, this can have a significant negative impact on our overall health.
This is especially true during allergy season. The good news is, there are several things we can do to improve indoor air quality, and achieve healthy indoor air. At Fresh Air Flow, we strive to keep our customers happy and healthy, so we created this list of tips to maintain healthy indoor air quality this allergy season.
Reduce Dust Accumulation
While it’s nearly impossible to keep your home totally dust-free, there are several things you can do to manage it including:
- Wipe down surfaces regularly
- Don’t let unneeded items pile up (declutter)
- Washing bedding weekly
- Run a vacuum with a HEPA filter a few times a week
Control Pollen
One of the main culprits of seasonal allergies is pollen. During spring and fall, be sure to check the pollen report for your region. On high pollen days, keep windows closed. Use an air filter to catch particulates. Wipe down pets that have been outside so they don’t track pollen through the house.
Control Mold and Mildew
Mold and mildew can quickly develop in your home, especially in areas that retain moisture and high humidity levels. They can trigger allergies, respiratory problems, and headaches. The best thing you can do to prevent mold and mildew from forming is to use a dehumidifier in your house. Keep areas like the kitchen and bathrooms well ventilated by opening windows and running fans, clean tiles and walls with a mold and mildew-prevention solution.
Combat Pet Dander
We all love our pets, but our allergies can do without their dander and other allergy triggers they can track around the house. When dealing with pets, especially in the spring, be sure to wash their bedding regularly. Additionally, you can:
-Brush and bathe them
-Give them a fish oil supplement
-Administer flea and tick prevention medicine
Maintain Your HVAC System
One of the best ways to keep healthy indoor air quality during allergy season is to schedule an annual maintenance check of your HVAC system. A licensed technician will not only check the mechanics to ensure everything is working properly, but they will clean/change air filters, perform air duct cleaning, and check for proper air flow from vents.
